Individual stock leveraged ETFs are not ordinary ETFs. They target a fixed multiple—typically 2x or 3x—of the daily return of a single stock. In Korea, the most popular underlying were Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the twin pillars of the country's semiconductor empire. The ETFs were marketed as tools for sophisticated investors seeking amplified exposure. In practice, they became gambling chips for retail traders chasing momentum.

The trap is embedded in the product design. Daily rebalancing means that in a volatile market, the ETF's net asset value degrades over time even if the underlying stock returns to its original price. This is the volatility decay problem, well understood by quants but invisible to most retail participants. The Korean ETFs did not just lose because Samsung dropped; they lost because the path was jagged. Each sharp rebound triggered forced rebalancing sells, locking in losses.

They saw a 2x daily return and assumed it compounded linearly. That is ignorance, not malice. Similarly, crypto leveraged token holders often ignore the fine print about "daily rebalancing." The product is engineered for a specific use case, and using it outside that case results in predictable losses. The bulls are correct that education and disclosure could reduce harm.

But they miss the bigger point. The architecture itself incentivizes misuse. Leveraged products are profitable for issuers primarily through fees and rebalancing spreads.
