Lido's wrapped staked ETH (wstETH) is a liquid staking derivative that accrues staking rewards in proportion to the underlying ETH. But the usage of that token has shifted from passive holding to aggressive leverage within DeFi lending protocols.
Users deposit wstETH into Aave or Compound, borrow ETH against it, then stake that ETH (or buy more wstETH) to compound yields. The net result is a multi-layered stack where the same ETH appears multiple times in the ledger. This is not new. What is new is the concentration of this behavior in a narrow set of wallets and the dependence on a single correlation assumption.
The protocol itself is not the risk. The composition of the liquidity is the risk.
Core: The On-Chain Evidence Chain

Evidence #1: Leverage Concentration

My contrarian take: the risk is not that Lido fails. Lido is robust. The risk is that the leverage layer fails spectacularly, and then the market blames Lido. It's a guilt-by-correlation narrative that has happened before.
